AMAZING YOUTH
Every day LaMarr hears about, or is in contact with, young people who are doing “amazing” things for the benefit of their country and communities. Now, in partnership with the Rickey Smiley Morning Show on 92Q, he wants to celebrate these achievements through some fantastic new awards.
Adolescents and young adults are often stereotyped negatively, but there are so many young people in this country doing remarkable things that it is time they finally get the recognition they truly deserve. Every Monday at 9:00 a.m., on Baltimore ’s #1 morning show, TheRickey Smiley Morning Show, LaMarr Darnell Shields will recognize the “amazing” things that ordinary young people throughout Maryland are doing, through what he calls Amazing Youth.
Amazing Youth is not about fame or fortune, but about achievements of ordinary young people aged 12 - 18 in areas related to their own lives and backgrounds. Through the segment, Amazing Youth , LaMarr will honor the great things done by youth, from helping their neighborhoods or starting their own businesses to outstanding achievements in sports, academics, arts and volunteering, just to name a few.
Winners will appear on the Rickey Smiley Morning Show with LaMarr. Only winners will be notified.
Award Categories
Academics:
Do you know a youth, who, despite great challenges from external forces, peer pressure, children, work etc, is excelling academically in school?
Sports:
Do you know someone, who, through his or her hard efforts and determination has achieved extraordinary results, or perhaps someone who spends their free time training others in a sport they love? Who do you think deserves recognition for their dedication to sports?
Arts:
Someone who is passionate about sculpture, the theatre, opera, photography or film? Who has made a difference to their local community by sharing their time or creations? Do you know someone who has achieved recognition and success in the arts? This is your opportunity to celebrate a love of culture.
Civic Engagement/Citizenship:
Do you know a youth who cares about the future of this country and others globally? Perhaps someone who has demonstrated their commitment by speaking or working for the benefit of others or a cause they believe in?
Health:
Who is your health hero? Is it someone who has spent their time helping or visiting the elderly or those in hospital? Perhaps it is someone who takes a passionate interest in health issues that affect their community? Or someone who has made a huge difference to a family member or friends recovery from illness?
Entertainment:
There are so many ways to entertain: song, dance, rap, comedy, writing. This award is not just for the famous but for the stars in our midst who entertain us every day. If you know a future Denzel Washington or Maya Angelou, then send us a nomination and let us know why they are your entertainment award winner.
Volunteering:
To put it simply, a volunteer is someone who gives their time and energy free of charge to assist other people. This little bit of effort can help make so many lives more bearable. So whatever kind of volunteering work it may be, we want to hear your special stories about a volunteer or team of volunteers who deserve our recognition for everything they do.
Community:
This award is aimed at celebrating the work done by a young person that significantly improves the lives of people within a community. Your nominee may have influenced decision making at local government level, participated in local action or in any way has made a huge difference for the benefit of others in their community.
Environment/Conservation:
This category pays tribute to those young people who have worked passionately to help protect, maintain and support our environment. The story of Maryland and our country’s culture is told through landscape, monuments and buildings and this award will go to a young person who actively recognizes this and the importance and beauty of the land we live in.
Unsung:
Do you know a youth who goes the extra mile every day but never asks for any recognition or reward? An inspiring young person who brings so much more than is expected to the people they encounter and always does it with a smile. Please tell us about that person who makes your home, school or community special.
Enterprise/Business:
Who, even at a young age has demonstrated an entrepreneurial flair that has resulted in recognition or fulfillment of a business plan? Do you know the next Donald Trump, Russell Simmons, Oprah Winfrey or someone who has helped their school or community through enterprise?
Cultural Diversity:
There are so many positive things about living in a state as diverse as Maryland and this is something that should be celebrated. Have you experienced a special effort by someone who has united their community by speaking out against racism, embracing their heritage or promoting Maryland?
